ICT X BCB 2019 Residency | SHIRLEY BHATNAGAR

Shirley Bhatnagar’s winning proposal Beyond White Mughals references a book by British author William Dalrymple, and revisits the cultural linkages between India and Great Britain. True to her practice of humorous comment on politics and society, mostly by way of hybrid anthropomorphic ceramic sculpture, her work at BCB explored alternative historical narratives interrogating the subtle cultural nuances of the former colonial relationship.

Shirley spent 6 weeks in residence at Stoke-On-Trent, presenting her project at the opening of the British Ceramics Biennial on September 6th, 2019. The residency is generously supported by the Charles Wallace India Trust

Currently based between Delhi and Jaipur, Shirley Bhatnagar, graduated from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad majoring in Industrial Ceramics. Since then she has worked on many public and private commissions. Shirley has headed the Fired Material Application discipline at the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur, and currently she is visiting faculty at several leading design colleges in India. Shirley also works on projects focusing on the revival of traditional crafts. She has four solo exhibitions to her credit and numerous group shows. She most recently exhibited at the first Indian Ceramics Triennale, Breaking Ground, held at the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur from August 31st to November 18, 2018.
